FLASHBACK: An early version of a mobile sound system

A RETRO ‘shubeen’ party night featuring the legendary godfather of sound system, Sir Lloyd Coxsone, will be staged at The Rich Mix, Bethnal Green Road in London's east end on September 11 at 8pm.

Tuareg Productions will be hosting this special jam session to celebrate the important contribution the sound system has made to to London life since the early 1960s.

The concept of the sound system first became popular in Kingston, Jamaica in the 1950s.

Playing an important role in Jamaican popular culture, a sound system is a group of engineers, disc jockeys and MCs playing blue beat, ska or rock steady music. During the 1960s and 70s famous DJs, such as Sir Lloyd Coxsone, would assemble turntables and huge speakers in the basements of houses, where people would come to celebrate the vibrancy of Jamaican culture.

Rich Mix will be reliving the exciting era of the sound system, with support from iconic and impressive on screen photographic backdrops and film clips. MC for the night will be Mikey Forenor and music is provided by Links UK sound. For lovers of the music from that era, this is a night not to be missed.
