AGE IS just a number when it comes to exercise says Hackney residents Abigail, Maria and Patou who are taking part in a health initiative by an east London council.

Donning swimsuits, the trio from the Kings Hall Leisure Centre were participants in the New Age Games activity programme being run by Hackney Council.

The games are being held at leisure centres across the borough and are free for all Hackney residents aged 50 and above.

The council said: "The aim of the games is to encourage older people to try out new sporting and leisure activities and promote health and wellbeing.

"The competitive element of the Games is based on a personal best system, meaning everyone competes on an equal basis trying to improve on their own personal best scores.

"So far Zumba, a form of Latin dance, archery and Bhangra dancing has proved particularly popular."

Also on offer are swimming, kayaking, belly dancing and fencing.

Christina Roberts, from Homerton in Hackney, who is in her 60s, said: "It's a good thing to exercise. It makes you feel good. I have registered for the New Age Games and hope I get fitter and more active."
