Police offer £20,000 for 2009 murder

SHOT: Daniel Duke

POLICE INVESTIGATING the murder of a 22-year-old man in 2009 are offering a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person(s) responsible.

Daniel Duke was shot in Walworth, south London, on November 2, 2009 and died in hospital the following day.

Witnesses close to Alberta Street, where Daniel was shot, say they heard footsteps approaching just prior to the shooting, and saw a Silver Ford Mondeo speed away immediately after. The Mondeo was later found burnt out in Peckham, south London.

Despite his injuries Daniel made a 999 call on his mobile and told the operator he had been shot. He staggered a short distance and banged on the front door of a nearby house, collapsing in the stranger’s hallway.

This week, just short Daniel’s 24th birthday on July 21, detectives from Trident and members of his family will be in and around Alberta Street appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector John Crossley, Trident, said:

“We are now 20 months on from Daniel's murder and his family has received no justice.

“Our investigation continues and we need more information and more people to come forward and tell us anything which may help us to find Daniel’s killer(s).

“I believe people in this area know why Daniel was shot and who is responsible. Without this information Daniel's killer(s) are still at large.

“I would also like to reassure anyone concerned about contacting the police that Trident has great expertise in protecting witnesses and there are a huge variety of measures that can be put in place to protect you should this be required.”

Daniel’s mother, said: “As a family need closure. We need to know what made someone shoot and kill Daniel. Why we had to bury him aged just 22 years old.

“I have had counselling for one year now, but then something quite random brings the loss back to the forefront of my emotions. I put on a brave face during the day but at night I cannot sleep. I cannot rest in peace.”

Detectives would also like the public’s help in identifying and eliminating two men from the investigation.

CCTV captured two men at a petrol station in Camberwell shortly after 20:00hrs on the night Daniel was shot.

The men arrived on foot and purchased a quantity of petrol in a green canister.
