Portia: I Love The Queen, But....

ON HER WON: Jamaica's PM has indicated her country could soon become a republic

JAMAICA's Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has given the clearest indication yet that Jamaica will soon be made a republic with its own head of state.

At present Queen Elizabeth II is the Head of State, represented by the Governor General in Jamaica.

In her inaugural address this afternoon as Prime Minister of Jamaica, Simpson Miller said it is time for Jamaica to become a Republic.

“We now need to complete the circle of independence,” said Simpson Miller in referring to Jamaica’s 50th year of independence this year.

“We will, therefore, initiate the process for our detachment from the Monarchy to become a Republic with our own indigenous President, as Head of State.
