R Kelly may face investigation in Georgia over alleged abuse

ACCUSATIONS: R Kelly denies the allegations of abuse and paedophilia made against him

R KELLY may face an investigation in Georgia following allegations of abuse made about him in Surviving R Kelly, a documentary which chronicles the allegations of abuse made against singer.

The six-part docuseries explores the stories of women who accuse the singer of abuse, predatory behaviour and paedophilia.

The legal representative of one woman who appeared in the documentary, Joycelyn Savage, has contacted the Fulton County District Attorney.

Gerald Griggs, Savage’s attorney, said the district attorney’s office was conducting an investigation into R Kelly, CNN reported.

A Chicago prosecutor Kim Foxx has called on alleged victims to come forward after the airing of the Lifetime documentary.

Speaking yesterday, Foxx said: “Please come forward...We cannot seek justice without you.”

Foxx, the first African-American women to be appointed to the lead role in the Cook County State Attorney’s Office, stressed that because of the nature of the claims, it was vital for accusers to come forward to give evidence.

"There's nothing that can be done to investigate these allegations without the cooperation of both victims and witnesses,” she said.

She added that the families of two alleged victims have already been in contact.

Referring to the accusations against R Kelly, Foxx tweeted: “It is our job here at the Cook County [State’s Attorney Office] to investigate claims like these in the interest of justice and public safety. Please call 773-674-6492 to come forward with information about these disturbing allegations.”

Jamilah Lemieux, a writer who worked on Surviving R Kelly, wrote in Huffington Post about the impact the series is having.

She said: "Since the first episode of dream hampton’s docuseries 'Surviving R. Kelly' aired, I have been inundated with calls, texts, emails and direct messages from friends, colleagues, former classmates and complete strangers. They thank me for appearing in the film and for constantly speaking out about Kelly and his predations. I’ve heard confessions from other survivors of sexual abuse who’ve never shared their stories with anyone, and heard vows to stop supporting a once-beloved artist."

R Kelly has denied the accusations made against him.

His lawyers accused Foxx of mounting a publicity stunt, Sky News reported.

In 2002, R Kelly was charged with 21 counts of child pornography in relation to video footage that allegedly depicted him having sex with an underage girl. R Kelly was acquitted off the charges and has always denied that it is him in the videotape.
