Racism fears put Walcott family off Euro 2012

CONCERNS: Walcott

THE BROTHER of one of England’s footballers has announced that their family will not attend the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine for fears of being racially abused.

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott was selected yesterday (May 16) by England manager Roy Hodgson for Euro 2012 in June but Walcott’s older brother Ashley said that he and his father Don will not travel to cheer on the 23-year-old.

Ashley tweeted: “Unfortunately my dad n i have taken the decision not to travel to the Ukraine because of the fear of possible racist attacks confrontations.

“Something's aren't worth risking, but begs the question why hold a competition of this magnitude in a place that can not police itself for foreigners of any creed to feel safe, but I'll be watching every minute.”

He added: “Racism has no place in the modern world.”

Walcott and other black England footballers were subjected to monkey taunts by Bulgarian fans in September.

The Foreign Office has warned supports about the possibility of altercations taking place should they decide to travel to Poland and Ukraine during the summer.
