IN THE LINE OF FIRE: Defoe
IT HAS been alleged that a number of Tottenham Hotspur players were subjected to racial abuse by Lazio fans during last night’s (September 20) 0-0 draw in the Europa League.
Monkey chants were allegedly heard coming from roughly 100 of the opposing fans inside White Hart Lane during the second-half.
The alleged chants were said to be directed towards Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon and Andros Townsend.
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas stated that he did not hear anything, but hoped UEFA would act swiftly if the chants did take occur.
He said after the match: “I was focused on the game and I haven’t heard anything from the players.
“UEFA is very active in these situations. Our objective is to kick racism out of football but I can’t point the finger tonight because I didn’t hear it. It’s up to the authorities to follow up any investigation.”
UEFA said they were waiting for a match report before possibly beginning any disciplinary proceedings.
