DANA SCRUGGS has become the first black person to ever shoot the cover of Rolling Stone in the magazine's 51 year history.

The photographer shot Travis Scott for the publication's January 2019 issue.

On Instagram she said: “I feel like I've been saying this all year... but is this real life? Travis Scott shot by me for the cover of Rolling Stone. I'm also the first person to photograph the cover of Rolling Stone which is sweet and bittersweet.”

She added: “I'm out here making history when a year ago I was on the verge of giving up being a photographer all together. Never give up on yourself.”

Scruggs was praised for her achievement and supporters came to her defence when another photographer re-posted an image of her cover alongside his but failed to credit her.

In response, Scruggs said: “This is what happens when men feel the need to insert themselves into moments that have nothing to do with them in order to inflate their egos...because they’ve forgotten long ago what it’s like to have any grace or show humility. Thank you all for holding Jonathan Mannion to account, until I could.”

The post appears to have now been deleted from Mannion’s account.

This is the second time this year that Scruggs, who has shot for Nike, The New York Times and GQ magazine, has made history with her photography.

In June, she became the first black woman to shoot for ESPN’s Body Issue in its 10 year history.

Scruggs’ subject was Olympic gold medallist and track and field athlete Tori Bowie.

Reflecting on her most recent success, one Instagram commenter said: “It's a damn shame that we are still have these ‘first POC to…’ moments. We are literally 20 years into the future, lol.”
