SERENA WILLIAMS has teamed up with Bumble to invest in women of colour.

The 23-time grand slam champion is working with the company behind the dating app where women make the first move to support women of colour-led startups.

Williams, who appeared in Bumble’s Super Bowl advert in February, has joined the Bumble Fund as an investor and active member.

The fund is focused on providing financial support to startups that are led by women from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

“In my life, and today more than ever, I’ve learned how impactful one woman’s voice can be when given a platform to speak and be heard,” Fortune reported Williams said in a statement.

She added: “I am passionate about building on this progress and opening doors for women of all backgrounds, especially women of color, to share their message and trust in their potential to accomplish great things. By joining forces with the Bumble Fund, we will continue amplifying female entrepreneurs and creating a place for them to personally and professionally champion their growth.”

Alongside Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of Bumble, Williams will judge a Bumble Fund pitch competition in April.

The move is another example of Williams’ committment to supporting female entrepreneurs. She has already invested in around 30 companies through Serena Ventures, her own venture capitalist company.

She is also a board member of Poshmark and SurveyMonkey.

The Bumble Fund was launched in 2018. It aims to help women who are largely ignored by the venture capital sector. Figures show that in 2017, black women received just 0.2 per cent of all venture capital funding, despite being the most educated and entrepreneurial demographic in the US.
