Spike Lee calls Trump a ‘white supremacist’

VOCAL: Spike Lee

ACADEMY-AWARD winning director Spike Lee, has criticised President Donald Trump for his treatment of African-Americans and immigrants in the country. Speaking to CNN anchor, Anderson Cooper on Tuesday during the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of 19 enslaved Africans arriving in North America, Lee, addressing the legacy of slavery in America.

He said: “If we Americans came, to study how this country started, we wouldn’t be talking about kicking immigrants out. Why are we still asking, ‘is this guy a white supremacist?’ It’s not even a question anymore. I mean, the Muslim ban, all Mexicans are rapists, murders and drug dealers.’

Lee also said that Trump “couldn’t make a decision between what’s right and wrong,” during his handling of the Charlottesville Riot in 2017.

When Cooper asked Lee if he thought Trump would be reelected, Lee joked. “Can I get on my knees now and pray?”

The director’s criticism of Trump comes after several 2020 Democratic candidates, when questioned about the President, also agreed that he is white supremacist.

The tirade did not end there however as Lee turned his attention to Trump supporters: “I think that people out there really look in their heart and I truly believe people know what’s right and what’s wrong. You know that. And a lot of these people getting behind this guy … they’re gonna be on the wrong side of history with him… For money? What are you doing it for? I mean… you kneel down before the altar of the almighty dollar, then I guess all bets are off.”

It’s not the first time that Lee and Trump have been embroiled in a war of words.

After Lee took a shot at the president during his acceptance speech at this year’s Oscars where he picked up Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansmann, Mr Trump tweeted: “Be nice if Spike Lee could read his notes, or better yet not have to use notes at all, when doing his racist hit on your President, who has done more for African Americans (Criminal Justice Reform, Lowest unemployment numbers in History, Tax Cuts, etc.) than almost any other Pres!”
