SHOW FAVOURITE: Tameka Epsom
FANS OF BBC show Strictly Come Dancing have called for the return of competition favourite Tameka Empson following the announcement that singer Will Young has removed himself from the line-up.
The Eastenders actress was the second star to leave the competition, sparking a 'racism row' after her sudden and shock departure, although a BBC source said the corporation could not be held responsible for the way in which the audience voted.
The #BringBackTameka hashtag has been trending on Twitter since Young, best known for his 2002 Pop Idol win announced he has quit the dancing competition due to "personal reasons".
@AmaraJodie wrote: “If Will Young has gone then there is 100% space to get Tameka back on! #BringBackTameka”
Another Twitter user @kirbsterella pointed out the show was in need of Empson’s entertaining personality: “Listen to the experts! #BringBackTameka the show needs its firecracker #domeafavour @Tameka_Empson”
The show has been rocked with accusations of racism following the high-profile exit of KISS radio personality and television host Melvin Odoom who was knocked out after receiving the least votes against injured contestant Anastacia.
The show has vehemently denied any foul play, insisting that a contestants place on the show is premised on audience voting.
In response to Young’s departure, the BBC said that the show “fully respects” the singer’s decision and that the structure of the series would not be affected by his sudden exit.
“The series will continue as planned, with elimination every week until the Grand Final. The previously eliminated contestants will not be returning to the competition,” a spokesperson said.
“There will be a Results Show and elimination this weekend as planned. The Saturday show will be slightly shorter this week, but with twelve dances and a magnificent professional routine there is still plenty on offer for viewers to enjoy.”
