Supplementary schools ‘should have more funding’

THERE SHOULD be more funding for black supplementary schools across London, a councillor has said.

Liberal Democrat councillor James Allie said councils don’t fund supplementary schools, even though they provide opportunities for children to learn more about their culture and language, as well as national curriculum subjects after school and during the weekends.

He said this lack of investment means many such schools – which are charged market rent – are struggling financially despite the valuable work they do supporting integration and community cohesion. Allie said: “Increasingly children no longer take up the full range of educational and cultural options offered by the supplementary schools because parents cannot afford the full fees.

“The ability of the schools to assist the children to take a full part in British society is been severely restricted because the schools are no longer affordable to most of the parents.

“This is a false economy. I hope all mayoral candidates will commit to supporting supplementary schools so that the schools can continue their valuable work.”
