SOME OF the highest-paid and most successful people in the world will have followed these steps to get them where they are. Taking our advice and using them yourself will certainly put your career straight on the fast track.

1. PUSH BEYOND WHAT'S EXPECTED OF YOU

Our first step may seem obvious, but it’s an important one to note if that promotion is something you really want. Don’t be afraid to ask your boss if you can take on more responsibility, but ask for specific projects or tasks that you know will not only challenge you but give you a trial run of the position you have your eye on.

Requesting specific work shows initiative and will, therefore, distinguish you from your colleagues.

2. ASK YOUR BOSS FOR CLEAR EXPECTATIONS

Half the battle of gaining a promotion is knowing how to make your boss happy. Sit down with whoever is directly in charge of you and ask if you can work together to set out a list of clear goals and expectations. This will give you a starting point so that you can begin to exceed them. You should also ask for regular performance reviews so you can lay out an opportunity for yourself to eventually approach the subject of promotion.

3. CREATE A POSITIVE IMAGE

You may be surprised to learn that one of the biggest reasons that someone fails to receive a job promotion is because of their external appearance. As the age old saying goes, you should “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” and when it comes to promotions, this couldn’t be any truer.

4. DOCUMENT YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

You might think otherwise, but your boss isn’t tracking every movement you make. This is why it should be up to you to document all of your achievements so that you have the evidence to refer to when you ask for a promotion. This is a technique known as “strategic bragging.” Those looking for jobs in London will also benefit from updating their CV with everything that they’ve achieved.

5. ASK FOR IT

We know it’s daunting, but sometimes the easiest way to get a promotion is to simply ask for one. Yes, there’s a possibility that the promotion won’t be forthcoming, but these might be due to circumstances that are beyond your control. There’s nothing wrong with asking your boss what you can improve so that you can place yourself in a better position for the future.

In the end, it’s usually better to demonstrate to your boss that a promotion is something you’re seeking, even if you might have to wait a little while to get there.

6. FIND A PROMOTION SOMEWHERE ELSE

If you’ve been putting in extra hours, taking on more responsibility and showing initiative at work and a promotion is still not in sight, it might be easier to look elsewhere. More often than not, it’s easier to attain a promotion at a new job rather than at your current one. Making this type of move could also bring other benefits such as a signing bonus, a new title, and leadership roles.
