UK gospel artist is first number one in new chart

GOSPEL ARTIST Guvna B made history this week by becoming the first UK singer in his genre to claim a number one hit in the new Christian and Gospel Albums Chart.

The 24-year-old musician, whose stage name is an acronym of “God’s Unique Vessel Now Assigned, beat the rest of the competition with his single Odd 1 Out, which trumped other songs Zion and Campfire.

Aside from reaching top of the Christian music charts, Guvna B is a weekly presenter on a hip-hop show for Premier Gospel.

The 2010 Mobo winner is also an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust.

Premier Gospel station director Muyiwa Olarewaju was proud of his colleague’s stellar rise in the chart.

The director said: “Getting to the number one position with a Gospel album represents a massive breakthrough in these charts, which have tended to focus on a slightly more traditional church market.

“The chart content has been a source of constant debate for quite a while but we hope this Gospel number one will pave the way for other Gospel success,” Olarewaju added.

Guvna B said he hoped his example will “encourage and inspire” other musicians in his genre to make it big.
