DIVERT: Campbell is calling on the FA to utilise fines to help fund KIO and SRRC

EX-ENGLAND CENTRE-HALF Sol Campbell is throwing his weight behind a new idea to allocate monies generated from FA fines to help finance anti-racism campaigning bodies – chiefly Kick It Out (KIO) and Show Racism the Red Card (SRRC).

The former Spurs defender is one of 60 other well-known footballing names that are supporting the initiative. Gabby Agbonlahor, Chris Powell, John Barnes and Shaka Hislop are just a few figures who are urging the FA into re-thinking how they invest money accrued from financial penalties inflicted on players, managers and clubs for breaching guidelines.

It is well-documented that KIO and SRRC operate on meagre annual budgets – the former’s is £450,000, the latter’s approximately double at £900,000. Both organisations are lobbying the PFA, FA and Premier League to dig deeper into their pockets and provide more funds, which would enable them to better combat racism in the sport at all levels.

The FA has levied significant monies from player misdeeds concerning racism incidents.

John Terry was fined £220,000 for using the term “black cu*t” toward Anton Ferdinand, Luis Suarez had to cough up £40,000 after being charged for addressing Patrice Evra as “negrito” multiple times, Ashley Cole stumped up £90,000 once he labelled the FA a “BUNCHOFTW*TS” on his Twitter account, and Rio Ferdinand paid £40,000 for his part in the notorious “choc ice” tweet about Cole.

Those four fines amount to £390,000, which equates to 86.7 percent of KIO’s current annual budget and 43.3 percent of SRRC’s yearly funding.
