The Voice extends BHM writing competition for schoolchildren

BLACK ICONS: Entrepreneur Madam CJ Walker, Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and political leader, Marcus Garvey

WHAT DOES Black History Month mean to you?

Is it a chance to pay homage to heroes past and present? A time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have gone before or does it give you a greater sense of cultural pride?

This Black History Month, The Voice launched our inaugural Made By History essay-writing competition asking 10 – 12-year-old schoolchildren what the special time meant to them.

The competition aims to aid students in their study of black history and connect them with icons of the past through unassisted research and a journey of self-discovery.

The first promotional campaign was published in our September 17 issue and in the days to follow, we were overwhelmed with the response from students, proud teachers and parents alike.

The initial closing date was penned for October 15, but following such a positive reaction, we have extended the competition until the end of Black History Month to allow time for all interested parties to take part.

We are asking students, currently enrolled in schools across the UK, to submit a 500-word article explaining what black history means to them.

The winning entry, selected by an independent panel from the community, will be published in The Voice newspaper alongside a picture of the author; who will also receive a gift voucher to the value of £50.

We ask that all entries are emailed to madebyhistory@gvmedia.co.uk or posted to: The Voice, Made By History Competition, Unit 236, Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, London, SE1 6TE. The deadline for all entries is October 15, 2015, at 12 noon.

If this competition is of interest, please share, distribute and encourage all 10-12 year olds who fit the criteria to enter.
