WINDRUSH: Dexter Bristol came to the UK on his mother's passport when he was eight years old

A FUNDRAISING page has been set up for the funeral of a man caught up in the Windrush immigration scandal who died before his status was confirmed.

Dexter Bristol, who was 57 when he died, came to the UK from Grenada in 1968 aged eight. He travelled to the UK on his mother’s passport and never obtained his own.

He was fired from his cleaning job because he didn’t have a passport. And at the end of 2016 his benefits were stopped because he was unable to provide documentation to prove his right to work and remain in the UK.

On March 31 he collapsed on the street where he lived and died.

The fundraising page set up to raise funds for his funeral costs describes him as “destitute and isolated” at the time of his death.

Bristol’s mother, Sentina, a former NHS worker, is now a pensioner living in sheltered accommodation.

In an interview with The Guardian, she blamed the stress of his personal experience of the Windrush scandal as contributing to his death.

She said: “This is racism. He was the victim of their policies, and it is a tragedy. I’m hoping no one will go through what I’m going though now.”

Bristol’s funeral is set to take place on May 17.
