Zac Efron in cultural appropriation row over dreadlocks

CONTROVERSY: Zac Efron

ACTOR ZAC Efron has landed himself in hot water after posting a picture with his hair in dreads on social media. The photo has prompted Instagram users to call out the High School Musical star for what they see as cultural appropriation.

The black and white photo, which was posted to his 36 million followers, read 'Just for fun'. One commenter wrote, “You have been afforded so much privilege and world experience that should also inform you that dreadlocks on white people are cultural appropriation.”

Another wrote: “Yall the thing is, black people get bullied and oppressed for wearing their hair in natural states, but when white people do it, it is "trendy and cool".

However, his loyal fan base was there to defend his latest look as one user wrote "Beautiful Zac :) as always. People can say what they want, yes dreads are a big part of black culture, but no we don't own a hairstyle."

While another added: “Guys its hair lol does it really matter. It’s 2018 and a huge amount of people are wasting their time [arguing] about Zac Efron’s hair.”

This isn’t the first time that Efron has been accused of cultural insensitivity. On Martin Luther King Day back in 2016, the star reportedly put a picture of the civil rights leader next to an update of his Instagram follower count.
