UK RAPPER, Wretch 32 has slammed critics who say he has ‘sold out’ to attain mainstream success.
Speaking exclusively to The Voice, the Tracktor star said: For someone to say I have sold out, is just preposterous”
The north London rapper, real name Jermaine Scott, shot to number five in the UK charts with debut single, Tracktor in January and his follow up single, Unorthodox, featuring rapper Example, outshone its predecessor by reaching number two.
Despite his recent success, the 25-year-old is no stranger to the music scene, beginning his MC career in 2006 by releasing a series of mixtapes from his Tottenham base.
It wasn’t long before 1Xtra’s DJ Cameo came across his work and the rest they say is history.
The rapper later went onto win a 1Xtra Mixtape Award and land a spot on Radio 1's Big Weekend in 2009.
Wretch, who is gearing up for the release of his debut album, Black and White, says he welcomes constructive criticism about his music, but claims his new music represents where he is now.
“You can’t really judge an artist if you haven’t listened to his whole discography, man”, he said.
Speaking on his album, he continued: “The album has taken a long time to make because every few months, my situation was changing and I wanted to keep it as current as possible”
“It’s almost like I’m drawing a picture that is supposed to be about my life from beginning to end. So how do you finish the picture while you still living it”,
“It’s exciting, personal and a well rounded body of work. I’m really proud of it”, he wraps up”, he added.
Wretch 32’s new single, Don’t Go, is out on August 14. His album Black and White follows on August 21.
