A JAMAICAN artist is set to launch a solo exhibition in London next week at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in central London as part of Black History Month celebrations.
Laura Facey’s exhibition, called Radiant Earth, will show cedar, mahogany and lignum vitae works of the award-winning artist.
She says of her two-week showcase, running from September 24 to October 4, that it highlights the abundance of forest food in the hills of Jamaica where she resides and the result is a tropical luxuriance with her own quest for spiritual elevation.
The exhibition will be opened by Jamaica’s High Commissioner to the UK, Aloun Ndombet-Assamba, and it is open to the public from Monday to Friday 9am to 8pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 6pm.
Facey’s family have long been artistic pioneers in Jamaica, having opened the National Gallery of Jamaica and the artist herself having founded ROKTOWA, an oasis and cultural beacon in the middle of downtown Kingston.
Her most iconic work is statue of a man and woman entitled Redemption Song, which stands in the middle of Emancipation Park in Kingston, Jamaica and was inspired by the iconic Marcus Garvey quote: “None but ourselves can free our mind.”
This particular piece was also commissioned by the Jamaican Government.
