TWO MEN have been charged with rape after a group of schoolgirls from Britain were attacked at gunpoint in Ghana.
The students were on a trip to the country when armed men forced their way into their accommodation in December, the BBC reported.
The schoolgirls and their teacher were sexually assaulted during the attack and some of their belongings were also stolen.
A security guard who attempted to intervene and stop the attackers was shot and suffered serious injuries.
Ishamel Akyene, 34, a Ghanaian national and Daniel Akpan, 29, a Nigerian national have been charged with 14 counts of robbery, one count of rape, one count of conspiracy to rape, as well as one count of possession of a firearm, one count of possession of an instrument intended for unlawful entry and one count of money laundering.
Akpan is also facing an additional rape charge.
Ghanaian police are searching for a third suspect.
The victims are receiving ongoing specialist support from police in the UK, their school and other agencies, the BBC reported.
The school that the victims belong to and the British police force involved in the investigation have not been publicly named as to protect their anonymity.
Around 90,000 British national visit Ghana each year and most visits are trouble-free, the Foreign Office says.
