PARTY TIME: Notting Hill Carnival-goers
NOTTING HILL Carnival remains a huge economic success story that contributes millions of pounds to London, according to a leading expert.
And in an interview with The Voice, David Weaver, one of the first people to study the monetary impact of Europe’s biggest street party which attracts over one million visitors every year, says that more must be done to help organisers increase the money it earns and generate employment.
Weaver’s company, Mann Weaver Drew, conducted a groundbreaking study for the former London Development Agency along with De Montfort University in 2004.
The research found that the Notting Hill Carnival contributes an estimated £93million in revenue to the local economy every year and supports the equivalent of 3,000 full-time jobs. The carnival also attracts an estimated 90,000 tourists from overseas.
Weaver told The Voice: “Carnival is probably generating significantly higher sums of money than when we first studied it.
“It’s really important that the government promote the economic benefits of this annual event and use it as a benchmark to recognise what black communities contribute in terms of money to the wider society.
