Brazilian footballer jailed for a year for racial abuse

GUILTY: Danilo Larangeira

AFTER BEING found guilty of racially abusing a fellow footballer in Brazil, a man has been sentenced to one year in prison.

Udinese defender Danilo Larangeira was on trial after television footage showed him spitting in the face of Atletico Paranaense player Manoel and calling him a “macaco”, which translated means monkey.

The incident occurred in 2010 during a match in Brazil for Danilo’s former side Palmeiras.

Following the altercation, Manoel immediately told the authorities about the incident.

Danilo was given a year's custodial sentence by the Criminal Court of the State of Sao Paolo but is expected to have his sentenced reduced to a fine following an appeal.
