Trump calls congresswomen of colour ‘very racist’

RANT: Donald Trump

DONALD TRUMP has called four Democratic congresswomen of colour who challenged him “very racist” in his latest attack on them.

The female politicians, who have been named “the Squad”, are Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib. They have criticised Trump’s administration and called for him to be impeached.

Trump said Omar, Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley and Tlaib were “bad” for the US in his most recent rant aimed at the four women.

In a tweet published earlier this week, Trump said: “The ‘squad’ is a very racist group of troublemakers who are young, inexperienced, and not very smart. They are pulling the once great Democrat Party far left, and were against humanitarian aid at the Border...And are now against ICE and Homeland Security. So bad for our Country!”

Trump’s latest critical comments about the four congresswoman follow his initial arrack on them in which he said they should “go back” to their countries. Each congresswoman is a US citizen and only one, Omar, was born outside of the US in Somalia. She became a US citizen in 2000.

The president’s rhetoric has fired up his supporters who chanted: “Send her back!” at a rally while he paused on stage last Wednesday (July 17). They also called for the Democrat to be locked up.

Responding to the attacks, Omar said: “Nothing this president says should be taken to heart. We are Americans as much as everyone else. This is our country and we are where we belong.”

His comments have attracted cross-party condemnation but the majority of the criticism has come from the Democratic Party. Just four republicans voted to formally rebuke his racist statements when a vote was held in the House of Representatives last week.
